Dear Children, Parent/Carers,

We hope you enjoyed the activities yesterday and thank you parents for your support, words of encouragement and helpful suggestions – keep them coming. Hopefully the next Teams assignment will run more smoothly. The chances are that if you have a question or are unsure, someone else will be in the same position. As always, we see learning as a 2-way process between Home and School.

Twice a week, we will ask the children to submit work via a Teams assignment for feedback. We will try our best to vary the type of task or at least subject; however, we have to work within the limitations of the system and our abilities! In addition, we would be delighted to see photos, examples of work or completed challenges on any subject so please feel free to email these to year4@abbeyroadprimary.co.uk.

We suggest the following times for lessons/activities:

Spelling, times-tables, personal reading: 30 – 40 mins daily (or as long as your child wants if happily reading a good book!)

Guided Reading: 20 – 25 mins

Literacy, Maths, Science, History or Geography: 40 – 50 mins

Other subjects such as ART, DT, ICT, PHSE and RE: 30 – 40 mins

Daily physical activity: 60 mins

These are suggested times and you may find that your child works quickly and completes the task well before the minimum time – we’d suggest they look back and check their work – Is it presented well? Have they joined their writing? What about capital letters and full-stops? Is their writing exciting? Does it make sense? Have they explained things fully in Maths using the correct vocabulary? Have they given reasons for their choices or opinions? Have they done their best? Would they be happy to show it to Mrs Avery or Mrs Marshall?

On the other hand, your child may find some of these tasks quite a challenge. We would spend no more than the suggested time and let us know so what we can provide some additional material or suggestions to help support them.

The work in this post explains what you should be doing whether you are at home or at school on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th January 2021.

Thursday 7th

Today’s activities include Guided Reading, Literacy, Maths, PE and PHSE.

Today’s Top Tip for Activity:

Our PE focus for this half-term is Athletics. Go for a brisk walk or a jog. Decide on a distance and see how long it takes you. Do you move faster when you swing your arms? What about if you lift your knees up? Which style suits you better – long slow strides or short quick ones? Repeat this exercise a few times over the next week and clock your pb (personal best). What is your record? Can you improve your time even further?

Spelling

Use your Edshed login (back of your reading diary) or the game in your spelling booklet to practice this week’s rule: Adding the prefix ‘sub’ which means under or below.

Guided Reading

Today, we’re going to continue with our work on Ice Palace. In today’s session, you will use inference to help you work out how the author wants us to feel about Starjik. Follow the instructions on the following PDF.

Guided Reading Thursday

English

Follow the directions in the PDF to explore Ivan’s decision. Use the suggested sentence structures to improve your writing. Remember to keep all your work safe- you’ll find it useful tomorrow.

English Thursday

Maths

Start your session with some times-tables practice on TTR.

This half term we are looking at multiplication and division. Today, we’re moving on to dividing. Please let us know if the lessons move on too quickly – we often need to spend an extra day on “a step” at school – we can always provide more reasoning and problem solving as well.

Friday 8th

Guided Reading

Today, we’re going to continue with our work on Ice Palace. In today’s session, you will use what we have learned about Ivan’s land to visualise the setting of the story. Use the instructions on the following PDF to help you. The children always like this one!

Guided Reading Friday

Today we have set a longer writing assignment: Ivan’s Letter. You’ll find this within your Teams assignments. Follow the directions on the assignment and hopefully all will go smoothly.
