Year 3 had an unforgettable day out at Creswell Crags, stepping back in time to discover what life was like in the Stone Age. From exploring mysterious caves to building shelters in the wilderness, the children were fully immersed in hands‑on learning—and they absolutely loved every moment!

Building a Wolf Skeleton

Our first activity put the children’s investigative skills to the test. Working together, they sorted through a collection of bones and tried to piece them together to create a complete wolf skeleton.
There were lots of discussions, guesses, and “aha!” moments as they worked out where each bone belonged. It was fantastic to see teamwork, problem‑solving, and scientific thinking in action!

Exploring a Real Cave

Next came a highlight of the trip—a real Stone Age cave!
Inside, the children learned how early humans survived using only the materials around them. They listened carefully to stories from thousands of years ago and imagined what life might have been like without electricity, warm houses, or even proper tools.
The cave sparked lots of curiosity, and many children said this was their favourite part of the day.

Shelter Building: Could We Survive the Stone Age?

After learning about Stone Age life, Year 3 headed into the wilderness to test their survival skills. Using sticks, branches, and leaves, the children worked in teams to build their own shelters.
There was plenty of creative thinking and determination as they tried to design shelters strong enough to protect them from the weather. Some groups even checked whether they could all fit inside!

Spear Throwing at the Bison

Finally, the children took part in an exciting activity—spear throwing!
They aimed their spears at a model bison, discovering just how challenging hunting would have been for Stone Age people. Despite the difficulty, the children threw with great enthusiasm, and there were plenty of cheers when someone hit the target.

A Fantastic Day All Round

The trip to Creswell Crags was a brilliant experience filled with learning, adventure, and fun. Year 3 returned to school buzzing with excitement, eager to share everything they had discovered about Stone Age life.
We are so proud of how enthusiastic, curious, and well‑behaved they were throughout the entire day.

Well done, Year 3!
