Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th January

Dear Children, Parent/Carers,

Good morning,

Wow Year 4! We are super impressed with all of the work and photos you have been sending in. The snowy weather was very timely for our changes in state work. Your next chapters for Ice Palace have shown us how much you have learned and progressed since September and you should all be super proud of yourselves. Mums and Dads probably need a pat on the back too. There has been some amazing encouragement and support happening.

We hope that you are all safe and healthy and have enjoyed your weekend. Hopefully you all managed to get some fresh air and are ready and good to go for a full week of work.

This week there are a few things we’d like to bring to your attention.

  • Science this week will be on Wednesday and Friday. Both sessions will require a small amount of preparation the day before and you will need some ice-cube trays or something similar! The trays will be fit for normal use afterwards so no need to go out and buy anything new.
  • Teams’ assignments this week will be on Monday – submitting a photo of Art work and Thursday/Friday – a writing task.
  • Finally, in addition to narrating the Maths lessons,  either Mr Marshall or Mrs Avery will be doing a morning greeting and then narrating a guided reading session every day. Let us know what you think!

Re Feedback: We’ve been asked by several families about the Maths worksheets and specifically how much help the children might need to complete the questions – particularly those at the end of the sheet. These questions are designed to help the children to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills. We often complete these questions as a class or in groups once the children have had a look at them first. Some of the children will be able to answer these questions independently, but may find explaining their answers quite challenging. They may need some help/support in using the correct vocabulary – this is fine. Others may find these questions very challenging and would benefit from working through the questions with a grown-up. They could then try another identical problem on their own. If you are finding this or any other part of the lessons tricky or you need some clarification please do not hesitate to get in touch.

As always we thank you for your for all your warm words of support and your feedback.

We suggest the following times for lessons/activities:

Spelling, times-tables, personal reading: 30 – 40 mins daily (or as long as your child wants if happily reading a good book!)

Guided Reading: 20 – 25 mins

Literacy, Maths, Science, History or Geography: 40 – 50 mins

Other subjects such as ART, DT, ICT, PHSE and RE: 30 – 40 mins

Daily physical activity: 60 mins

Top tips for early finishers:

  • Is it presented well?
  • Have they joined their writing?
  • What about capital letters and full-stops?
  • Is their writing exciting?
  • Does it make sense?
  • Have they explained things fully in Maths using the correct vocabulary?
  • Have they given reasons for their choices or opinions?
  • Have they done their best? Would they be happy to show it to Mrs Avery or Mrs Marshall?

Follow this link:

https://www.discoveryeducation.co.uk/what-we-offer/discovery-education-coding

Click Login in the top right hand corner and select Espresso.

Use Student25350 and the password: ARpass to login and click on coding. The children are all very familiar with this process.

Click “Block coding” on the menu bar at the top and select level 4 from the dropdown menu.

From here the children can access refresher lessons on Levels 1- 3 or move straight on to Level 4: An introduction to variables.

For today we would like them to look at the last session is this unit: Debugging variables

This is an activity that most children will be able to complete independently.
