Dear Children, Parent/Carers,
We were so delighted to see so many of you completing and turning in your Teams assignment on Tuesday. Well done Team Year 4. We hope you have enjoyed the activities so far this week.
Every Monday we’ll post some work and pictures that get sent in the previous week, so keep the emails, photos and work coming.
The next Teams assignment is due to be completed on Friday (Science).
We suggest the following times for lessons/activities:
Spelling, times-tables, personal reading: 30 – 40 mins daily (or as long as your child wants if happily reading a good book!)
Guided Reading: 20 – 25 mins
Literacy, Maths, Science, History or Geography: 40 – 50 mins
Other subjects such as ART, DT, ICT, PHSE and RE: 30 – 40 mins
Daily physical activity: 60 mins
These are suggested times and you may find that your child works quickly and completes the task well before the minimum time – we’d suggest they look back and check their work – Is it presented well? Have they joined their writing? What about capital letters and full-stops? Is their writing exciting? Does it make sense? Have they explained things fully in Maths using the correct vocabulary? Have they given reasons for their choices or opinions? Have they done their best? Would they be happy to show it to Mrs Avery or Mrs Marshall?
On the other hand, your child may find some of these tasks quite a challenge. We would spend no more than the suggested time and let us know so what we can provide some additional material or suggestions to help support them.
The work in this post explains what you should be doing whether you are at home or at school on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th January 2021.
Thursday 14th
Today’s activities include Guided Reading, Literacy, Maths, PE and PHSE.
Today’s Top Tip for Activity:
Our PE focus for this half-term is Athletics. Last week we looked at running/jogging. What was your pb (personal best)? This week our focus is on jumping. How high or how far can you jump? Make sure you check out what you are doing with a grown-up before you get started, we don’t want any accidents. Try a standing jump – stand with both feet together and see how far you jump. When you land the furthest back part of your body is what counts! So try to avoid sitting back or putting your hands back.
Can you jump further/higher if you bend your knees? What if you swing your arms? When you’re out and about in a park or your garden – if it is long enough- see what happens if you run up to your jump. Again think about bending those legs and swinging your arms? Repeat this a few times over the next week and clock your pb (personal best). What is your record? Can you improve your distance even further? Which do you prefer – a standing long jump, running long jump or a high jump?
Spelling
Use your Edshed login (back of your reading diary) or the game in your spelling booklet to practice this week’s rule: Adding the prefixes ‘super’, ‘anti’ and ‘auto’.
Guided Reading
Today, we’re going to continue with our work on Ice Palace. In today’s session, you will use inference to help you work out what is happening to Ivan and to predict what will happen next. Follow the instructions on the following PDF.
Guided Reading Thursday
English
Follow the directions in the PDF to find out what happens to Ivan. Will the wolves get him? Today we’re going to recap expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials and think about what might happen next in the story. Keep all your work safe- you’ll find it useful tomorrow.

Maths
Start your session with some times-tables practice on TTR.
This half term we are looking at multiplication and division. Today, your Maths lesson will be a little different. Due to difficulties at White Rose the next 5 teaching videos are missing, so Mrs Avery and Mr Marshall will be narrating the videos. Watch out for some familiar slides. You can still pause or replay the video whenever you need to. Today Mrs Avery will help you explore the multiplication and division facts for the 6 times-tables.

Teams Assignment
Science: States of Matter: Is water always wet?
Please try to access and submit the work for this lesson via Teams.
This afternoon we will recap our work so far in Science and then we will explore changing states of matter. As well as some suggested optional activities, there are 2 parts to this assignment that must be done.
Part 1 is a “match the temperature sheet”.
In Part 2, we’d like you to explore changing the state of something – see the PDF for some simple house-friendly suggestions. We’d like you to “Turn in” a photo or drawing of what you did as well as an explanation – this can be submitted in written or audio form in Teams. Make sure it includes lots of scientific vocabulary.
Just in case you experience difficulties with Teams here are resources you will need to complete the activities. You can always email Part 1 and 2 of the assignment to us at: year4@abbeyroadprimary.co.uk
